Prime Minister to flag-off Nagpur Metro project shortly

नागपुर Nagpur (NGP): There are indications that after assuming office at the Centre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit the state for the first time in August. During his visit, the Prime Minister is likely to flag off the metro rail project in the city. Along with Ahmedabad, metro rail projects in Nagpur and Lucknow are also likely to get green signal. Sources said Modi is likely to visit city on August 21.

There is reason for these cities being chosen for the metro rail project, sources said. Gujarat is Modi’s home state, while Maharashtra will go for assembly elections this year and Uttar Pradesh was chosen after the NDA performed extremely well in the Lok Sabha elections. The estimated cost of Nagpur metro is Rs.8,500 crore and Rs.4,500 crore for Lucknow metro.

It is believed that the PM is likely to visit the RSS headquarters in Nagpur on August 21 and is likely to give the green signal during this time.

Sources said the Union finance ministry is likely to clear the three projects in the next week.

Gujarat’s first metro rail project in Ahmedabad has been going on for the past many years. Earlier, it was decided to start a metro rail from Gandhinagar to Ahmedabad. But now that it has been found that the Gandhinagar metro rail project is not viable, the Gujarat government has decided to start Ahmedabad metro line in the first phase. To be built at an estimated cost of Rs.10,000 crore, the metro will be build on a 22-km long rail line. The state urban development department has spent Rs 565.60 crore in research over the project. The state government told the assembly that the first phase of Ahmedabad metro project will be completed in 2018 and the entire project by 2022. Union FM Arun Jaitley allocated Rs 100 crore for Gujarat metrol rail in the 2014-15 Budget, while the state has announced allocation of Rs.500 crore.
