Proposal for Electrification of 33-km-long Una-Amb Andaura BG track cleared

Una: The railway authorities have cleared the decks for the electrification of 33-km-long Una to Amb Andaura broad gauge rail track.Sumit Sharma, a member of Northern Railways, said a sum of Rs 110 crore had been provided for the project and the process of tendering had been initiated by the Ambala Railways Division.The work on the 90-km-long Nangal to Talwara via Una broad gauge section was initiated in 1974 and the foundation stone was laid by then Railways Minister Lalit Narayan Mishra at Amb. About 50 km part of the track is now functional with two express trains running between Una and Delhi, besides a passenger train linking Una with Ambala.While the 17 km track between Nangal and Una is electrified, the remaining 33 km portion between Una and Amb-Andaura sans electrification. Consequently, the engine of the Himachal Express train has to be changed from electric to diesel and vice-versa every day during its journeys.Sumit Sharma said besides the electrification work, a sum of Rs 100 crore was being spent on the extension of the track from Amb-Andaura to Daulatpur Chowk during the current financial year.
