PUNE: The proposed Pune Metro Rail project on the Nigdi-Swargate route will stretch up to Katraj. State Cabinet has approved the request of the General Body of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to extend the metro route.
Initially, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the project was up to Swargate from Nigdi. DMRC had prepared the DPR at the behest of the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations (PMC and PCMC).
Apparently, the State government has approved the extension of the route since it would ease the pressure of road traffic on the stretch from Swarate to Katraj. Many would prefer to commute by metro rather than using their personal transport.
Confirming the developments, Pune Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Pathak said that as the State government approved the route between Swargate and Katraj and the PMC will prepare a DPR for it. It will then submit the details of the project to the Centre for approval.
“The State government has directed that the PMC need not approach the State government for approval of financial projection for the Swargate-Katraj stretch of the project,” he added.
