Broken railings, cracked surface and plants growing on walls — such is the present state of Ranchi’s main railway overbridge.
But good news is in store for the capital commuters.
The much-needed revamp of the overbridge, which connects Ranchi’s busy Main Road with key localities like Doranda, Hinoo and HEC, will soon get underway at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore.
The state road construction department is all set to rope in an engineering consultant to prepare a detailed project report (DPR).
Popularly known as the Doranda overbridge, the 40-year-old structure has undergone cosmetic repairs many times. However, no major facelift was carried out.
As a result, much of the bridge got damaged over the years. The base and the roof, where plants have started growing, particularly deserve urgent attention.
Officials of the road construction department are also of the same opinion.
“We have invited quotations from engineering consultants. Interested parties will have to respond by June 3, which is the last date,” said executive engineer of road construction department, road division, Umesh Prasad Sinha.
Repair and maintenance of the 350m long bridge has been included in the department’s budget for the next fiscal. Sources added that Rs 2 crore had been earmarked for it.
After the DPR is ready, the road construction department will start floating tenders to rope in a construction firm for the project.
Sinha added they hoped to complete the DPR in the next couple of months and repair work would be over by the next fiscal.
Besides, the department is mulling to evict hawkers and permanent shopkeepers who have encroached upon the area under the bridge.
Earlier, technocrats of the road construction department had prepared a DPR, but it lacked minute details. Efforts were also made to displace the shops, but owners and hawkers opposed the move.
