MUMBAI: According to senior railway officials, the proposed third and fourth railway tracks on the 64 km Pune-Lonavla suburban section will be approved by the central cabinet and Niti Aayog in the next three months.
The work of the railway tracks will commence once the project is approved. In April 2016, B K Dadabhoy, former, Pune divisional railway manager, announced that the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) would prepare a detailed project report of the proposed tracks on the 64- km route.
Neeraj Khare, senior official from MRVC said, “We have already submitted the detailed project report to the Indian Railways. According to the rules, any project above Rs 1,000 crore has to get an approval from the central cabinet and Niti Aayog. Accordingly, we have sent the proposal and await their approval.”
He further added that the project cost of laying the third and fourth railway track is Rs 4,800 crore the work of which will be undertaken by MRVC.
According to the officials, the existing double line corridor, between Pune and Lonavla is over saturated, with the line capacity exceeding by 120 per cent. A total of at least 58 trains and 10 goods trains ply in each direction per day.
As per the detailed project report, encroachments between Shivajinagar and Chinchwad stations will be critical for the completion of the project. The existing Kamshet station has to be dismantled and the new station has to be shifted 600 metres towards Pune for laying the third and fourth railway tracks.
The report also states that land is available in continuous stretches from Kasarwadi to Dehu road and from Ghorawadi to Vadgaon. The earthwork can be started at these locations.
According to railway officials, “The third and fourth tracks can be laid along the tracks on Pune to Lonavla side because sufficient land is available with minimum obstructions. It will also facilitate the integration of future lines of Pune-Nashik track.”
