Railway Cops, Commuters foil rape bid on woman at railway station

KALYAN: An alert Policemen and Commuter jointly thwarted a rape attempt on a 27-year-old woman near Vitthalwadi station in Kalyan on Saturday night. While two of the three accused have been caught, a hunt is on for the third one.

The victim, who works at a private firm in Vitthalwadi, was waiting for a train to Ambernath. As it was late, she decided to eat something and took a shortcut across the tracks to an eatery outside the station. Commuters often use the short cut route.

“Seeing the victim walking alone, the three accused chased her, threatened her with knives and dragged her into the bushes near the tracks. A commuter, who was on a local, saw the accused drag her and immediately called up a constable, Anand Kadam, who is known to him,” said Machindra Chavan, senior police inspector of the Kolsewadi police station.

“On receiving the call, Kadam, along with other staff, rushed to the spot, barely 500 m from the police station and nabbed two of the accused -Navnath Kamble and Nitin Dhansal. The third person managed to escape,” said Chavan.

They had initially conspired to rob the woman, but on seeing her alone, they planned to rape her, the accused told the police. The three have been booked on kidnapping, robbery and molestation charges.

A holiday court on Sunday remanded the arrested two in police custody till September 10. The police are ascertaining whether the accused are involved in any other past incident.
