Pune Railway Division cracks whip against erring caterers

The Pune railway division, during the last financial year, took to task 41 caterers and food stall owners at Pune railway station for supplying substandard food to commuters.

These erring parties were slapped with a fine of Rs 1.77 lakh and cautioned to improve the quality of food prepared for commuters.

With Indian Railways giving special attention to the food served to commuters, the Pune railway division has formed a special committee to keep an eye on the quality of food.

“The members of the panel undertook surprise checks in different trains and food stalls at Pune station to inspect the quality of food,” said a railway official.

The official admitted that the number of contractors penalised in the last financial year was much more than in 2011-12.

“The task of the committee is to carry out surprise inspections in moving trains to assess the quality of food. They also have to take feedback from commuters,” a railway official said.

The contractors and food stall owners have welcomed the move saying quality of food cannot be compromised.

The Indian Railways have already launched a toll-free helpline (1800-11-321) empowering passengers to lodge complaints against the quality of food or any other issues related to the catering service. The helpline is operational during from 7 am to 10 pm throughout the week.
