Shahabad Markanda (SHDM): In a case of gross negligence by railway men on duty, a railway crossing gate was opened before a train passed, resulting in a collision between the train and a tractor trolley, here on Tuesday. Fortunately, no loss of life was reported, but rail traffic on main Delhi track came to a halt for about two hours. About nine trains (five up and four down) were affected due to the mishap.
At about 8.05 am Murri Express had reached Shahabad (Kurukshetra) railway station and left for its destination within three minutes. Even as it reached Jaitpur railway crossing, its gate was opened and a truck and tractor trolley was were allowed to pass. Though the truck managed to cross, the sugarcane-laden tractor trolley was hit by the train.
Though red-faced railway authorities blamed the tractor driver, locals assembled near the crossing asked them why the gate was opened when the train was on track. The villagers also sought an assurance in writing from the embarrassed railway authorities that no action will be taken against the tractor driver.
Meanwhile, surprising everybody, gateman Chiranji Lal said that he was asked to open the gate at 8.05 am, which he did. “We have sealed the log book and other concerned records. An inquiry would reveal who was at fault,” said Madan Singh Minna, station superintendent, Shahabad.
