Railway Police set up vigil against Naxalites and Ultras

NAGPUR: The railway security forces are on high alert in view of the ongoing People’s Liberation Guerilla Army (PLGA) week, which began on Monday, in Naxal affected regions. Sources said that the police department in Gondia, where Naxalites have strong support base, have alerted the government railway police (GRP) and railway protection force (RPF). Naxalites observe this week in the memory of their martyred cadres.

In December 2006, the red cadres had burned an engine in Gondia. Police suspect that the derailment near Gondia-Chanda Fort section might be the handy work of Naxalites. The security agencies are not taking things lightly after the recent Naxal attack on policemen escorting a train in Bihar. Security sources also said that the Naxal cadres may use this opportunity to avenge the deaths of their leaders like Kishanji and Azad.

Security has been tightened along Adilabad section, Wadsa Desai Ganj in Gadchiroli and Chandrapur districts. Bomb detection and disposal squads have been pressed into actions round the clock at all crucial stations like Gondia.

Government railway police SP Shashikant Mane said more forces are being deployed at Ballarshah, Chandrapur and Gondia. “Patrolling has been stepped up. We have also strengthened our intelligence machineries,” said Mane.

DG Gour, senior divisional security commissioner, SECR, said security has been increased in trains especially during nights. “We have deployed gunmen along the tracks and tunnels to conduct patrolling,” he said.
