Railway station canteen yet to become a reality

LUDHIANA: With railway authorities having failed to start the canteen, frequent travellers, including those travelling AC class, are unable to find food stops at the railway station. The canteen-cum-refreshment room was closed in January as the assigned contractor had “personal problems” in continuing with the business.

Says Mitul Kumar, a student of Model Town who frequently travels to Delhi by Shatabdi: “It has been more than a year that the canteen has been closed and since then, we haven’t seen the canteen starting again. A canteen is a must on the railway station.”

Another resident Shivani, a homemaker from BRS Nagar, said: “The canteen is very important for the city railway station and especially for a station of one of the leading industrial city in north India. We don’t want to risk eating at stalls which are unhygienic.” Deputy station superintendent S S Salaria said the canteen would be started soon. The reserve price for a tender had been fixed at Rs 15.6 lakh per year. The refreshment room was to be opened by February but nothing has been done till now.
