Railways dominate the 53rd National Open Athletics Championship

Ranchi: Hosts Jharkhand drew a blank on the opening day of the 53rd National Open Athletics Championships, one of the biggest domestic track-and-field events of the season, that kicked off at Hotwar on Saturday, after a lacklustre inaugural ceremony.

Railways (RSPB) ruled the roost with as many as seven medals followed by ONGC (4), SSCB (2), Police (2) and LIC (1).

In the women’s 5000m, Railways (RSPB) got two medals — gold and silver — while ONGC’s Kavita Raut bagged the bronze. RSPB’s L Surya clinched the gold in a close finish, clocking 16:24.58.
