Railways enters 1 billion-tonne cargo club

Indian Railways carried close to 100 million tonne cargo in March — the second time ever to carry such large volumes in a month.

It carried about 1,009.6 million tonne (1 billion tonne) in 2012-13.

With this, the Railways enters the select group of countries such as the US, China and Russia that load a billion tonne of cargo in a year.

The extra cargo was helped by coal, cement, food grains and steel.
