NAGPUR: The Nagpur division of Central Railway has imposed a fine of Rs.2,000 on a contractor for supplying dirty bedrolls to a passenger on Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express.
The complaint was lodged by passenger Mohd Shahid Sharif, a consumer rights activist. Sharif had lodged the complaint on February 7, when he travelled to Mumbai. However, he was intimated about the action only on May 11 vide a letter.
It also highlights the sorry state of affairs in the railways when it comes to taking action on complaints or address grievances of passengers.
“I had noticed cockroaches in B/2 coach and dirty bedrolls were supplied to me. Besides, private vendors, who boarded the train at Nagpur, resorted to overcharging for water bottles. I drew attention of the railways by filing a written complaint,” Sharif said.
After inquiry, commercial department of the Central Railway found substance in the complaint and imposed a fine of Rs.2,000 on the erring contractor. The train ticket examiner (TTE) was also warned for ignoring overcharging in the coach.
“Railways promise comfortable, safe and secure travel but I received the letter after three months, highlighting the laxity towards passenger complaints,” Sharif said.
