Railways identify land for Jeypore-Nabarangpur line

BHUBANESWAR: The Railways has identified land for the much-awaited Jeypore-Nabarangpur broad gauge line and an electric engine workshop at Narla in Kalahandi district.

The two projects will be jointly developed by the Railways and the Odisha government, a statement issued by East Coast Railways said.

The Railways has identified plots and submitted documents to the state government through the land acquisition officers, it said. The projects have been earmarked for early commissioning in the interest of the development of less-developed areas of the state.

The Railways, in its statement, expressed hope that land acquisition would be smooth with the cooperation of the state government. “Railways is keeping its mechanism ready to start work on the projects as soon as the land is available,” it said. These projects would help in fostering growth and development of nearby areas, the statement said.

Earlier, the Railways used to appoint a special land acquisition officer who dealt with the land requirement issue.

However, as per the memorandum of understanding, Railway and State Government will have equal responsibilities. While the Railways will bear half of the construction cost, the Government will bear the entire cost of land. Now that the ECoR has furnished the details of land requirement, so it is the state government’s responsibility because acquisition remains the single biggest problem for progress of the projects. In 2016-17, when Ministry of Railways sanctioned the Jeypore-Nabarangpur line, the cost was estimated at Rs 747.91 crore. The project was targeted to be completed in three years.

The broad gauge line is important considering it brings connectivity to Nabarangpur district with an existing station on Kottavalasa-Kirandul line. This rail line will provide connectivity to Koraput, Jeypore, Jagdalpur and Dantewada. It will also connect Nabarangpur to Junagarh and result in cutting travel time to Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. Both Jeypore-Nabarangpur project and Narla Electric Engine Periodic Overhauling Workshop are located in backward regions and expected to bring in development.

In October last year, an agreement was signed between Odisha government and the Indian Railways for the 38-km broad gauge line between Jeypore and Nabarangpur. The state government has agreed to provide land for free and bear 50 per cent cost of the project.

The cost of the project is Rs 747.91 crore and is expected to be completed in three years. The project is important for connecting Nabarangpur district of western Odisha with Jeypore in the southern region to an existing station on the Kottavalasa-Kirandul line.
