Railways opens counter to collect Relief Materials for transportation to Kerala

TIRUCHCHIRAPPALLI: Lending a helping hand to the people of Kerala, the Tiruchi Railway Divisional authorities have opened a counter here to collect relief materials for the flood-affected victims of that State. The counter has been opened at the railway parcel office at the Tiruchi Junction.

Relief materials collected at the counter would be dispatched to Kerala by train and road. Public willing to donate relief materials could deposit them at the collection counter and it would be sent in various lots to Kerala, said a Southern Railway press release here.

The Ministry of Railways has decided to provide free transportation of aid and relief materials to Kerala in the wake of the floods. In a communication addressed to the General Managers of all Zonal Railways, the Railway Ministry said no freight would be charged for transportation of relief materials to Kerala as of now.

All government organisations across the country could book relief materials free of cost to Kerala. Other organisations, as deemed fit by the Divisional Railway Managers may also avail of this provision.

The communication further said Divisional Railway Managers have been empowered to take decisions relating to attaching additional bogies/ coaches/ vans in various Kerala – bound trains.

The Railway Ministry said it would be preferable not to load relief material in the usual parcel vans but in separate vans/ coaches. Since transportation of relief material is to be undertaken free of charge, no ancillary charges such as demurrage/ wharfage or others are to be charged on the same, the communication said.
