Pune: Subodh Jain, Member (Engineering) of the Railway Board, said the Indian Railways was serious about laying a third line between Pune and Lonavala to ease traffic and provide smooth service between the two cities.
Speaking at the annual day function of the Indian Railway Institute of Civil Engineering (IRICEN), he said, “The Pune-Lonavla project has been sanctioned and soon an estimate will be prepared. Work on the project will start as soon as the the funds are allocated for the project.”
The function was attended by Central Railway General Manager B P Khare, IRICEN Director C P Tayal, Pune Division DRM Suneet Sharma, and several other senior officials of Central Railway.
Jail said the technical feasibility of the high speed trains, which will run at 200 km per hour, has been examined and other things will also be worked out soon.
“Other important aspects such as pricing, traffic and development model – Public-Private partnership or government venture – are being decided. We also need to be decided whether tracks will be dedicated for the high speed trains or hybrid trains – catering to both high speed and regular trains,” said Jain.
Jain congratulated IRICEN officials for setting up a building which received platinum rating from the Indian Green Building Council. He said IRICEN had a humble beginning as it was housed at Shivajinagar station complex. “The institute was later moved to the DRM office building. When a Division was established in Pune, it was decided that the institute be moved out from the DRM office campus. Now, IRICEN will operate from the sprawling complex,” said Jain.
Poorva Keskar, Vice-Chairman, IGBC, Pune, said the new building of IRICEN bagged 61 points out of 67, which is the highest earned by any building in the state .
