Rifle that dropped from cop’s hand while traveling in Central Railway local found in Nahur bushes

MUMBAI: A .303 rifle that a GRP constable accidentally dropped from a Central Railway local on August 3 was found on Wednesday. Sambhaji Hatkar (29), on duty in the 24-hour ladies compartment that night, had been suspended for negligence.

Attached to the Kurla GRP outpost, Hatkar had been standing on the footboard. He had placed the rifle in a corner, gripping it with his left hand and holding the vertical rod with the other. The rifle fell between Nahur and Mulund stations. Hatkar got off at Mulund and informed his superiors about the loss. He then trekked back to look for the weapon. His colleagues joined him and the search continued on Sunday. The rifle was unloaded as Hatkar had placed the rounds in his pocket.

Senior inspector Shivaji Dhumal said the weapon was found in some bushes at Nahur. The loss of the constable’s weapon had sparked fears of its misuse.
