SECUNDERABAD: South Central Railway has become the first 100% LED (Light Emitting Diode) lit Zone on Indian Railways, achieving the milestone yesterday i.e., 20th June, 2018, well before the target date of 30th June, 2018 set by Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Railways.
The 100% mark was achieved by providing 1,64,291 numbers of LED luminaries replacing the conventional bulbs in 23,740 railway residential quarters on the Zone. This is expected to result in 35.4 lakh unit electrical energy saving amounting to Rs. 3 Crore per annum apart from reduction in carbon emission by 3187 tonnes per year.
Earlier, South Central Railway had provided 1,35,417 numbers of LED luminaries to cover all its 733 railway stations and 1424 service buildings by March, 2018, which also was a first amongst all Zones. The commissioning of LED lighting at all residential quarters on the Zone, has added to make the Zone 100% LED lit now.
The cumulative impact of total LED lighting on SCR is to the extent of 82 lakh units electrical energy savings, amounting to Rs. 7 Crore per annum for the Zone. The impact of carbon emission on SCR on account of this initiative will be cumulatively reduced by 7372 tonnes per year, sizably contributing to a greener environment.
Vinod Kumar Yadav, General Manager, SCR congratulated the Principal Chief Electrical Engineer of the Zone, A.A.Phadke and the entire team of officers and staff of the electrical department for the achievement, which has added yet another feather to the cap of the Zone.
