Kolkata: The South Eastern Railway (SER) has reported a near 9.5 per cent growth in freight earnings to Rs. 3,445 crore (apprx) for the first four months (April to July) of FY-16. Freight earnings stood at Rs. 3,145 crore (apprx) in the year-ago-period.
During the period, SER had loaded 43.81 million tonnes of freight (as against 42.96 million tonnes loaded during the corresponding period of last year). Freight loading in the April to July of FY-16 period grew by nearly 2 per cent; as against the comparative four months of last fiscal.
According to release issued by SER, the growth in freight loading came on the back of increased carrying of pig iron & finished steel, iron ore (3.35 per cent growth) , food grains, fertilizers (21 per cent) , etc.
There was however a marginal shortfall in loading of coal, raw materials to steel plants and cement due to heavy rains and sluggish demands, SER said in the release.
