Short-distance trains cancelled due to security concerns on NFR

Guwahati: Even as long-distance express trains from Guwahati to Upper Assam resumed services, the railway authorities on Sunday cancelled five short-distance trains.

According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) authorities, Lumding-Tinsukia-Lumding Passenger, Mariani-Guwahati-Mariani Inter-city Express and Kamakhya-Dibrugarh Express trains have been cancelled due to security reasons.

NFR public relations officer, Nripen Bhattacharya, however, said that Upper Assam-bound long-distance trains like Kamrup Express, Rajdhani Express and Brahmaputra Mail left from Guwahati on Sunday.

Bhattacharya said the three long-distance trains were able to resume their services only after damaged railway tracks in Karbi Anglong district were restored. He said security convoys were provided to all the long-distance trains.

An NFR official however, said that as it was not possible to provide security convoys to all the trains so the short-distance passenger and intercity trains were cancelled on Sunday.

“Security is the main reason behind cancellation of five trains. Besides, we don’t have sufficient engines to run security convoys,” he said.

Long-distance trains from Guwahati to other parts of the country were also resumed. The train services were cancelled on Friday after the All Bodo Students Union called a 12-hour rail blockade demanding separate Bodoland state.
