Soma Constructions to Start work on Reach-4 of Kochi Metro Rail

Kochi:  Construction work of the first leg of the fourth reach of the Kochi Metro Rail has been entrusted with Soma Constructions. The fourth reach is between Ernakulam South and Tripunithura-Petta.  The work of the fourth reach will be carried out in two parts — the first from Ernakulam South to Vyttila, and the second from Vyttila to Petta.

“Soma Constructions has already started the preliminary works. The work of the remaining stretch is likely to be awarded to Larsen & Toubro (L&T),” said a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation official. The work of the fourth reach was initially undertaken by Era Constructions, which was relieved from the work owing to slow progress.  The work will be allotted to Soma and L&T at the same amount that was quoted by Era in the bidding. Meanwhile, the construction work at MG Road is yet to gather pace due to unidentified utility lines that lie underneath the road. Soma Constructions, which has undertaken the work of the third reach, had started piling works but was forced to stop the work after coming across utility lines during the process.

Though the DMRC had conducted inspections to trace utility lines prior to the launch of construction work at MG Road, it could not trace these lines.

“The BSNL and Kerala State Electricity Board have submitted detailed sketches of the utility lines passing through the area. But the KWA did not have adequate sketches of the utility lines. However, the utility lines are traced after various inspections and, accordingly, the work needs to be redesigned,” sources said.

However, DMRC officials said the slight delay in the work on MG Road would not affect the overall progress of the work or the deadline.
