South Western Railway scales New Heights in Infrastructure Development works and Freight Loading targets

All over Indian Railways, 953 kms of new line commissioned. This is the highest ever in the history of Railways. The contribution of SWR to this figure is nearly 21% (201 km of 953 km) which is extraordinary achievement. The Zone Railway also surpasses Freight Loading targets!

HUBBALLI: Indian Railways in general & SWR in particular is undertaking infrastructure development for enhancing line capacity with massive investment. Tremendous strides have been made in area of infrastructure development. In the year of 2016-17, this Railway has commissioned new Railway line of 201 km.This is the highest ever commissioning of new lines achieved in the history of SWR .

The new line commissioned this year include 111 km. between Shravanabelagola-Nelamangala, 27 km between Ginigera-Chikkabenakal & 63 km between Rayadurga-Kadiridevarapalli. An amount of Rs.1900 crore has been has been incurred in upgrading infrastructure this year which is the highest so far.

The grant of EBR (IF) – Extra Budgetary (Institutional Finance) allotment of Rs.850 crore has been fully booked.

In addition to the record of new lines, the following doubling works (totalling to 59km) have been commissioned. This includes 13 km of Doubling between Yelahanka-Chennasandra, 7 km of doubling between Yesvantpur–Yelahanka, 16.48 km between Harlapur-Sompur-Bannikoppa, 11.52 Km between Kambarganiv-Kasanhatti-Alnawar & 10.69 km Bannikoppa-Bhanapur sectionon SWR.

Railway has successfully carried out the extremely difficult work of “Shifting of Tippu Sultan Armoury” for Bangalore-Mysore doubling during the year to facilitate doubling work between Bengaluru and Mysuru. Such a work has been executed for the first time in India and probably in Asia.

The section between Amravati colony to Kotturu has been commissioned with absolute block system and 4 crossing stations.

On the newly commissioned lines 15 crossing stations have been commissioned in addition to 11 no.s of Halt stations.

Commissioning of newly Electrified lines on AC Electric Traction

To speed up traffic on the over-saturated lines, SWR has commissioned Electric traction on 257 Route KMs. With the commissioning, electrified territory has increased from 208 RKMs to 465 Route Kilometers (RKMs). The details are:

Yelahanka (YNK)–Dharmavaram (DMM) Single line Section (211 RKMS / 245 Trake KMs) Channasandra (CSDR)–Yelahanka (YNK)–Lottegollahalli (LOGH) (2nd line) Section Bengaluru (SBC)–Kengeri (KGI)–Ramanagaram (RMGM) Double line Section.

As a part of Railway Electrification, 04 nos. Traction Sub Stations (TSSs) were commissioned during 2016-17 viz. at Sri Satya Sai Prasanthi Nilayam (SSPN), Malugur (MLU) & Someshwara (SMWA) in Yelahanka–Dharmavaram Section and at Bidadi (BID) in Bengaluru–Ramanagaram Section.

All over IR, 2013 kms of electrification has been done (against the target of 2000 kms). This is the highest ever achieved by Indian railways. Here too, SWR made its mark by contributing 13 % of Electrified track this year.

For the maintenance the rakes, MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) Shed was commissioned at Banaswadi during the financial year 2016-17.

On the freight loading front, despite stiff targets were set by Railway Board, South Western Railway (SWR) met ahe targets successfully during the financial year 2016-17. SWR has loaded 44.2 Million Tonnes (MT) which is 5% more than that of last year .This best ever originating freight loading during the last 10 years and second best loading in the history of SWR since its inception. The major commodities contributed to this loading are Iron Ore: 14.5 MT (33%), Coal: 12.6 MT (28.5%), Iron & Steel 9 MT (20 %). SWR’s freight basket also includes Cement, Petroleum Products(POL), Container, Fertilizer, Food grains and other goods viz. Sugar, Onion, Automobiles, Granite, Granulated Slag, etc.

The originating freight earning for the financial year is Rs.3513 Cr.

Hubli Division the major freight loading Division of South Western Railway and ranks 7th on Indian Railways during the current year with 38 Million Tonnes. SWR is the one of the few Zonal Railways achieved loading targets.

This was possible on account of the best efforts put forth by team of South Western Railway and the support from its esteemed freight customers. Major customer of SWR is viz. JSW .Other customers are BMM Ispat, NMDC, MSPL, Zuari, Ultratech, ACC, JK Cements and all others.

Initiatives taken to improve loading

New Sidings Opened:

M/s Adani Agri Logistics Ltd./Malur – The siding is constructed for unloading of food grains of privately owned Bogie Covered Hopper Wagon for Food grains (BCBFG Wagons-bottom discharge).

M/s.Kudgi–National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Siding/Kudgi: The siding is constructed for unloading of Coal in High-sided Bogie Open Wagon (BOXN) for Power House coming up at Kudgi in Vijayapura District. Out ward loading of Fly ash is projected

New Stations for handling Goods Traffic: The following stations have been opened for goods traffic:

7 Co-user permission to M/s SMIORE has been accorded for Co-use M/s Star Metalic Siding– Loading of Metal Ores has restored.

Other Initiatives for loading:

  • Loading of Iron Ore to M/s KIOCL (Kudremukh Iron ore) was restored this year.
  • Loading of vehicles in Defence Bogie Military (DBKM) wagons (Military Owned Stock) was started at Hosur.
  • Station to Station concession policy has been announced and is being implemented to encourage point to point loading.
  • Loading of Onions from Nelamangla, a place near Bangalore has been started for the first time and has witnessed steady traffic.
  • M/S Kirloskar Siding is coming up near Ginigera

It is relevant to mention here that Indian Railways has achieved highest ever annual freight loading of 1107 MT this year (previous best of 1104.2 MT in 2015-16).

The following major commodities carried by Railways have witnessed highest loading this year.

  • Iron ore loading is the highest ever at 137.2 MT (previous best was 136.9 MT in 2007-08)
  • Steel loading is the highest ever at 48.3 MT (previous best was 42.5 MT in 2015-16)
  • Highest ever coal loading from Coal India Limited sources is to be around 223 rakes per day which is the highest ever against 212.8 rakes per day last year.
