Southern Railway women retain crown

Southern-Railway-teamDefending champion Southern Railway retained the women’s crown defeateing Western Railway 62-49 in the final of the 4th annual Jeppiaar All-India Invitation Basketball tournament at Sriperumpudur. The winners led 33-27 at half time. Renu Maurya (W Rly) was adjudged the best player of the match.

Chhattisgarh Third

Earlier in the morning, Chhattisgarh state team beat Kerala State Electricity Board 53-48 to claim the third place. Junior international Swaranjeet Kaur of Chattisgarh was adjudged the “Most Valuable Player”.


The Oil and Natural Gas Commission entered the men’s final defeating Indian Army 68-55.

In the other semifinals, defending champion Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai easily overcame Indian Navy’s challenge 54-34.

RESULTS: Women’s (final): Southern Railway 62 (Geethu Anna Jose 24, Kokila 19) bt Western Railway 49 (Renu Maurya 13, Smruti 11); 3rd Place: Chhattisgarh 53 (Poonam Chaturvedi 12, Swaranjeet Kaur 26) bt KSEB 48 (Stephy Nixon 11, Shilji George 11, Jeena 10).

Men semifinals: ONGC 68 (Riazudeen 25, Trideep Rai 12) bt Indian Army 55 (Sridhar 20, Jairam Jat 15). IOB 54 (Pratam Singh 15, Harish Korat 14) bt Indian Navy 34 (Kasi 10).
