Sreedharan to visit Vizag for Metro Rail project in October

विसाखपटनम Visakhapatnam (VSKP): The ground work on the much-anticipated Vizag metro rail (VMR) project is likely to begin in October with the visit of a special team led by Metro man E Sreedharan, who was appointed by the AP state government to take up feasibility study of metro rail projects in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada.

Sreedharan, who had recently made his maiden visit to Vijayawada to study the Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangalagiri metro rail (VGTMMR) and is expected to land in the Port City in the first week of October, said Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) chief engineer B Jayaram Reddy, who is also one of the members of the seven-member technical committee appointed by the state government to select the agency to conduct the feasibility study and DPR, confirmed the development.

GVMC has already submitted all the requisite basic reports to the state government as well as DMRC and are now awaiting their response,” Reddy said.

Another civic officer said that the metro rail project would first be operational at Vijayawada and then in Visakhapatnam. “If everything goes according to plans, both the metro projects can be operational by 2018,” said the officer exuding confidence.

It may be pertinent to mention that the state government gave its nod for the two metro rail projects on August 1 this year and set up special purpose vehicles on August 14 to oversee the projects, following which it appointed a seven-member technical committee on August 30 before finalising DMRC as the DPR consultant in first week of September.
