Kolkata: South Eastern Railway organised an interactive seminar with delegates from Iron Ore industry on “Iron Ore by Rail” as part of ‘TARGET’ (Traffic Augmentation for Required Growth and Enhancement of Throughput) at its headquarters at Graden Reach in Kolkata on Wednesday. SER, which has taken up the drive to augment traffic with focus on freight loading, completion of throughput works and plan of action and performance, is organising meetings with representatives of different industries. The first meeting was held on 12th August with representatives from Steel Industry. The main objective of organizing such meetings is to explore the possibilities of increasing railway’s originating freight loading by removing different obstacles faced by its freight customers.
The seminar was attended by representatives from Tata Steel, SAIL, Adhunik Group, Rungta Mines Limited, Essel Mining, Thriveni Earth Movers, JSW Steel Ltd, Monet Ispat and Energy Ltd., Prakash Industries Ltd., Shyam Sel & Power Ltd., Bhusan Power & Steel Ltd. etc.
At the meeting, Radhey Shyam, General Manager SER shared details about the infrastructural development work taken up by the railway for the benefit of its freight customers. All necessary steps would be taken for timely availability of rakes at iron ore loading, he said adding that SER has taken all steps to move iron ore traffic in fastest means.
Ambrish Kumar Gupta, Chief Operations Manager, SER said iron ore forms the major chunk (51%) of the total loading target of 134 million tonne (mt) fixed by Railway Board. However, last year the loading of iron ore suffered due to closure of mines, poor demand from steel plants and other domestic sectors and lower exports. A K Behera, Executive Director, Traffic Transportation(S), Railway Board, spoke about Railway’s endeavour to maintain close interaction with the industries.
Earlier, while welcoming the representatives of the industry, P Dansana, Chief Freight Transportation Manager, S E Railway said iron ore is the main loading commodity of South Eastern Railway and in the current financial year the loading target of iron ore as fixed by Railway Board is 69.69 mt.SER is taking steps to reach its loading target by improving its infrastructural facilities at its main loading points at Banspani, Barbil, Barsuan etc. In the current financial year up to July, SER has loaded 23.75 mt of iron ore.
