Tatanagar: Tatanagar railway station, an A-class station on Indian Railways, is deprived of the very basic amenities.
Though several express and passenger trains make a halt at Adityapur and Gamharia — which fall under the Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway (SER) and see a regular passenger footfall of over 1,000 — these stations have no toilets, waiting halls, public address systems or inquiry kiosks.
Even the passenger sheds are modest with the capacity to shelter only a few and barely providing respite from the scorching sun or heavy rain.
Concerned over the regular discomfort of passengers, local NGO Jan Kalyan Morcha held a public meeting in Adityapur on Sunday.
It was decided that a charter of demands would be soon submitted to the SER authorities, urging them to ensure basic passenger amenities at these two stations, which are mostly used by travellers to go to Bihar.
Morcha president Om Prakash told that they had in 2011 placed a similar demand before the Chakradharpur railway division authorities.
“We had requested for the installation of a footbridge, a lavatory and a waiting hall, besides a public address system for the announcement of arrival and departure of trains,” he added.
The Chakradharpur authorities fulfilled only one demand — a footbridge at Adityapur station. “But, the bridge if of little use as it is situated 400 metres away from either side of the platforms. People still cross the tracks to go from one platform to another,” Prakash said.
“Many passengers, including children and women, have had narrow escapes while hurrying to catch an approaching train,” he added.
Another major issue plaguing both stations is the absence of lavatories.
Prakash pointed out that passengers, especially women, were forced to relieve themselves in fields.
The NGO has threatened to launch an agitation if the SER authorities fail to fulfil its demands.
