Thane to be 1st suburban station with escalator

1MUMBAI: Thane is set to become the first station on the Mumbai suburban railway division to get an escalator. Central Railway officials said the escalator will become operational in the first week of June.

“The escalator will come up on platforms 3 and 4 and connect them to the 12-m wide foot overbridge at the CST-end of the platforms,” CR’s public relations officer AK Singh said.

With a high footfall of 6.54 lakh during the morning and evening peak hours, Thane has been ranked as the busiest suburban station.

CR operates 825 services on the main line and 90% of these halt in Thane. In addition to this, 210 services of the Trans-Harbour network originate and terminate in Thane.

“The Thane escalator will be a major milestone for CR. At present, the only escalator on CR’s network is in Pune,” said Singh. The 1.7-m escalator, which is being installed at a cost of Rs 75 lakh, can carry 100 commuters per minute. Once the escalator is commissioned, two more will be installed-one on platforms 5 and 6 in Thane and another in Dombivli.

The escalator was supposed to become operational by May 15. “But work was delayed because of the anti-local body tax strike by traders and suppliers. Work is nearly complete now. Our electrical department will carry out tests and the escalator will be opened to public in the first week of June,” said a senior CR official.

Around 30 escalators are slated to come up at important suburban stations in the next two years. “Work of installing escalators at Dadar, Andheri and Borivli stations is expected to be complete before the end of June,” WR’s chief public relations officer Sharat Chandrayan said.
