On the occasion of the World Environment Day, the Railway has embarked upon joint tree planting on vacant lands, along with the Forest Dept, NCC and CRPF. The plantation drive targets 1.2 lakh saplings, spread over 115 acres of identified land in Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division, ranging from Parassala to Vallathol Nagar.
The inaugural tree planting programme was held at Parassala Railway Station on Wednesday. Pallipuram CRPF DIG Ajay Bharatan, Thiruvananthapuram’s Additional Divisional Railway Manager T Kuppan, NCC officials and officials from the Forest Dept participated.
Planting of saplings is proposed in 10 engineering sections on all Saturdays in June. The engineering sections are Thrissur, Chalakudy, Aluva, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Mavelikkara, Kollam and Varkala. On an average nearly 2,000 saplings are proposed to be planted in each section on a day.
