It is likely to get International Management System
Tiruchirapalli: Maintaining the highest fleet of high-horsepower diesel locomotives in Southern Railway zone, the Diesel Loco Shed here is closer to getting an International Management System (IMS) certification.
The Southern Railway has called for tenders to hire an agency to carry out a thorough audit of the over 40-year-old shed, considered one of the premier diesel loco sheds across the Indian Railway network.
The certification is a combination of ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System, ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System and 18001 Occupation Health and Safety Management System. Railway officials told that the agency is likely to be hired by June end. Acting on the Railway Board’s directive that Diesel Loco Sheds across the country should go in on for ISO certification, the shed has put in place the required system towards achieving IMS certification, the sources said.
Auditors of the agency engaged for the audit would inspect the shed and verify relevant documents to ascertain whether the prescribed systems and standards are in place. The officials said safety gear have been provided to employees and necessary calibration of instruments have been done as part of putting in place measures towards getting the international certification.
The shed maintains 45 high horsepower ‘EMD’ diesel locos; 51 ‘Alco’ type diesel locomotives; 37 diesel power cars; five shunting locomotives and five metre gauge locomotives. The metre gauge locos are currently operated in the Nilgiri Mountain Railway hilly terrain between Coonoor and Udhagamandalam.
Documents relating to the systems in place have been kept ready for audit, the officials said stating that if everything were to go as per schedule the shed would attain the IMS certification in two months. Adherence to international standards would enable the shed in maintaining and improving safety and reliability.
Southern Railway has four diesel loco sheds situated at Tiruchi, Erode, Ernakulam and Tondiarpet in Chennai. The diesel locos come to the shed for periodic attention and scheduled examination before sent back for operation. The Tiruchi shed is only one in the Southern Railway zone to accommodate the highest number of 45 newly manufactured 4,500 high horsepower EMD diesel locos. Officials said the Erode shed was also working towards getting the international certification.
