Touts face tough times in festive season

SURAT: Railway authorities have intensified their operation against the touts involved in the illegal sale of railway tickets ahead of the festival season.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) on Tuesday arrested a tout from Ashwini Kumar Road with 16 train tickets for various destinations and seized cash worth Rs 28,000 from him.

RPF inspector, Gracious Fernandes had information regarding the illegal sale of railway ticket from the Suryanagar society on Ashwani Kumar Road. The RPF staff raided the house and Hraday Narayan Mishra, 41, with 16 tickets for the destinations like New Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Odisha.

Official sources said that the WR recently suspended three booking clerks at the railway station booking centre for the irregularities. The clerks were caught red-handed for possessing excess cash and that they were helping the touts and agents.

“The department is keeping a close watch on the illegal activities. The festival season has started and the passengers are queuing up for booking their train tickets. It is this time when the touts derive maximum benefit with their illegal activities,” said Fernandes.

He added, “The RPF has started a campaign to curb the illegal activities of the touts. We have been gathering information on other touts involved in the wrong practices.”
