The engine of the Hyderabad–Kolhapur Express, bound for Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Terminus, Kolhapur, Maharashtra, derailed near Hulugi village in Koppal taluk on Monday. However, there were no casualties.
The train left Hospet Junction at 10.15 a.m. and was going towards Munirabad station.
Eight labourers working on the track ran away on seeing the train. The loco pilot slowed down the train on being alerted by the gangmen. It stopped just before Hulagi station. However, the engine derailed.
All the passengers were sent back to Hospet after another engine was attached to the train.
There would have been heavy casualties had the train derailed on the Tungabhadra Railway Bridge, situated a few metres away. Hundreds of passengers would have washed away in the river, which is in spate.
Traffic on the Hulugi–Munirabad Road was disrupted for two hours.
