Train robbers’ gang busted, 11 held

ALLAHABAD: The Government Railway Police (GRP) sleuths on Sunday busted an inter-state gang of robbers and arrested its kingpin along with 10 associates from platform number six of the Allahabad Junction. The gang was trying to escape from the city at the time of arrest.

Around 65 mobile sets, six cameras, nine wrist watches, Rs 44,500 in cash were recovered from these gang members along with foreign currency, two country-made pistols and four live cartridges.

The arrested persons were identified as Mohd Shakeel (kingpin), Sameer alias Salman, Mohd Chand, Mohd Mateen, Dilshad, Mohd Ashu alias Sanu, Mohd Shafique of Kanpur and Niyaz Ali and Mohd Sagir of Unnao, Mohd Zeeshan and Mohd Nafees of Hardoi.

GRP inspector VS Yadav said “the gang operated in trains passing through different states”. He added that gang members used to target populated areas (fairs) and dupe people of costlier items.

The inspector added that looted articles worth Rs.5 lakh were recovered from the gang. The arrested criminals had several cases pending against them with different police stations of Kanpur, Lucknow and Hardoi.

Police said that Mohd Shakeel was the gang leader and used to travel long distances to loot passengers.
