Train thief arrested from Kanpur Railway station

KANPUR: The Government railway police (GRP) arrested an alleged thief from Kanpur Central railway station late on Wednesday night. He used to travel on various trains and allegedly deprived passengers of their cash and valuables.

He was identified as Dilshad son of Sirkekhani Vilaspur in Gautambuddh Nagar district. The police said that Dilshad along with his two aides had committed a robbery in Jansadharan Express on the intervening night of November 18 and 19. The police recovered sedatives, a sharp-edged knife, a debit card, and a stolen mobile phone from his possession.

“He confessed to his involvement in Jansadharan Express robbery. He also accepted that he had been targeting passengers on trains for the past few years,” said inspector GRP Tripurari Pandey.

Acting on a tip off, police team laid a trap near new foot-over bridge and managed to trap Dilshad.

He along with his accomplices often travelled as passengers on express and passenger trains. They mingled with passengers, gained their confidence before robbing them.

The gang used to steal valuables when the passengers were asleep or snatch cash and valuables by brandishing firearm and knife after pulling emergency chain of the train.

A senior police official said, “Soon more teams will be formed to nab such gang members active in the trains across the region.”
