Training for Kerala GRP personnel under way in Tiruchi

First-of-its-kind exercise in Southern Railway zone

Thiruchchrappalli: Enhancing better coordination with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to ensure security of passengers and sensitising field staff to various aspects of railway functioning are the twin aims of an ongoing familiarisation training programme organised for Kerala Government Railway Police (GRP) here.

The programme began at RPF Zonal Training Centre in Khajamalai on the direction of the Railway Board, New Delhi. Similar sessions are being carried across the country by RPF.

Forty-eight GRP personnel, including a woman Head Constable, from Kerala are attending the six-day training programme in Tiruchi, the first-of-its-kind in Southern Railway zone, senior RPF officers told.

A detailed training module has been prepared by RPF for indoor sessions. The day begins at the crack of dawn with yoga class, followed by physical training, and indoor sessions on various topics. A team of RPF instructors attached with the Zonal Training Centre are conducting the classes. Railway instructors from different departments have also been holding sessions, said the officers.

The need to conduct the orientation programme has been felt as many GRP personnel get transferred to Railway Police from different local police stations. Hence, it is important for them to know the working of the railways and the RPF and their role, said the officers.

Since the RPF and GRP are both involved in ensuring security of rail passengers, the aim of the programme is to enhance coordination between the two forces, said a senior officer.

Plans are afoot to conduct a similar course for GRP personnel of Tamil Nadu in the near future, the officer added.
