Secunderabad: Here is some good news on the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) front. The 4.5-km railway line between Tellapur and Ramachandrapuram that is part of the phase II project could become the first section to be completed. MMTS phase II works are currently on between Ghatkesar and Sanathnagar via Moula Ali (37 km), Bolarum-Medchal (14 km) and Falaknuma-Umdanagar (14 km) for more than a year now. Connectivity from Moula Ali to Sanathnagar will bypass Secunderabad station, providing much needed relief to commuters during peak hours.
Five new railway stations are planned as part of the project between Sanathnagar and Moula Ali. On the new 4.5-km Tellapur-Ramachandrapuram stretch, the railways will now begin laying the line and electrify it. “The earthwork is done on this stretch and works are at an advanced stage.
In about four months, works on this stretch could be completed,” said P.Srinivas, Chief Project Manager at Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, which is executing the project for South Central Railway (SCR).
Besides completion of earthwork on these stretches, 25 bridges have been completed while signalling and electrification works are in progress. Railway officials said that works are also progressing at a fast pace between Moula Ali and Ghatkesar.
However, multiplication of the railway line has been stopped on the 4-km stretch between Suchitra and Sanathnagar as the Army authorities have objected to it. The local military authorities have asked the railways to compensate them for defence land alienated for laying the existing line, which was laid more than two decades ago.
The Army has contended that alternative land has to be provided by the railways before phase II works can commence on this sector.
Airport connectivity in limbo
Connectivity to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport still remains uncertain. Railway connectivity from Umdanagar to airport was part of the original phase II plan but RVNL did not issue contract to take up work on this stretch when works commenced last year. The Telangana chief secretary is set to meet officials of the railways and RVNL to discuss the matter.
