Underground corridor work of Lucknow Metro Rail to begin by December 2015

Lucknow (LKO): The construction of Lucknow’s first ever underground metro corridor from Charbagh to KD Singh Babu Stadium will begin from December this year, said E. Sreedharan, principal advisor to LMRC ( Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation). The corridor will comprise three underground stations—Hussainganj, Sachivalaya and Hazratganj. Also, the first metro rail comprising four coaches will arrive in the city for trial run by November 2016.

Sreedharan said, once train arrives, its commissioning on track will take another 1-2 months. Total 20 trains of four coaches will be ordered which will be supplied in phases. Currently, LMRC is evaluating bids received for procurement of trains (rolling stock). Three companies have applied for the tender—French firm, Alstom which has been leading supplier of metro coaches in Chennai and Kochi metro; Chinese railway firm, CSR Corporation Ltd in alliance with Bombardier (for signaling) and the third is consortium of Rotem, BML and one of the experts in signaling systems, Ansaldo.

Tender of rolling stock would be finalised and awarded by June-end, after which procurement of trains will take 65 weeks. Sreedharan said, “Usually, tenders of rolling stock and signaling systems are floated separately. But in case of Lucknow metro, we merged both the tenders so that only one company takes care of both – trains’ supply and signaling system. This improves efficiency and speeds up work.

For building the 3.5km underground corridor, a detailed design consultant (DDC) has to be roped in for preparing preliminary scope of work.
