Underground work for Jaipur Metro likely from mid-Feb

Jaipur: After the completion of soil test and preliminary building survey for underground Metro corridor (Chandpole to Badi Chaupar) in the Walled City area, the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) is expecting to start work by middle of February.

Officials said preliminary design of the shaft has been completed and the mobilization to Bhankrota casting yard will be done by January end. Tunnel boring machines is also expected to be brought soon.

The Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) will also acquire three shops near Chandpole gate. “To curb traffic menace near Chandpole metro station, land acquisition is of utmost importance. These shops will be demolished and shafts will installed in the area,” an official added

Work will begin near Chandpole gate initially, the JMRC has also submitted a traffic diversion plan to the traffic department. As per the contract, the awarded firm, Continental Engineering Corporation (CEC), has to complete the work in 36 months.

A shield machine called the Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM) will be used for construction of underground tunnel work. Officials explained, “The CEC was awarded the project as it procures two such machines. The length of the tunnel will be approximately 1.4 km, and it is expected to be 5.6 metre in diameter.”

The CEC has already completed the building condition survey of nearly 2,900 old houses and shops on the route. The company carried out a mapping (factual condition) of houses and shops as a precautionary plan and for future records.

“Soil investigation requires appropriate results as the strength of the ground, soil condition and other parameters have to be checked. Soil investigation is crucial and depending on its texture further plans have to be chartered. Also, soil test will explore the erosion and other details before tunnel-boring machines can be pressed in to service,” said the official.
