NAGPUR: Vishwas Power Engineering Systems Pvt Ltd, a medium scale enterprise from city, has bagged a contract to supply traction transformers to the Indian Railways. The company, which has a turnover of around Rs 25 crore, competed with major corporates dominating the segment and emerged as lowest bidder in a tender held recently.
The company was founded in 1996 and has its unit at Butibori industrial estate of MIDC. Promoters of Vishwas Power claim it is the first midsize company to be manufacturing transformers for the railways, meeting its stringent norms. The company’s transformers were quoted at Rs 2 crore each against the price range of Rs 2.75 crore to Rs 3 crore quoted by others, Sudhir Tapikar, Senior Marketing Manager of Vishwas Power told, “we have got a contract of Rs 13 crore in all for erecting an electricity sub-station under Bhusawal Division of Central Railway. Out of this, Rs 4 crore is for the traction transformers.”
The company could meet all the stringent parameters set by the railways. The product made by the company has now got seal of approval from the railways. This means Vishwas Power can now further bid for supplying its own transformers,” he said.
Vishwas Power has got other assignments of erecting substations for the railways too. Prior to this, the transformers were procured separately by the railways and provided to the company only for installation.
Tapikar said, “the transformer market is dominated by big players, especially companies having turnover running into Rs 2-3,000 crore. Vishwas Power is a much smaller company compared to them. Yet, it could not only meet the design specifications of the railways but also quote a much competitive rate.”
Traction transformers are key for running electric locomotives. The power supply to the engine is through the transformer which is part of the substation. “If the equipment is defective, power supply can be affected disrupting the rail movement,” he said.
Along electrified railway lines, there are traction substations every 40 kms or so. Under the current assignment, existing sub-stations will be upgraded by Vishwas Power.
