Will Pune Metro miss the bus?

PUNE: With the State government dragging its feet on the revised Pune Metro rail proposal, the city could well miss the bus, in getting the Centre’s nod to kick off this ambitious project.

Pune is in the race along with 10 other cities of the country to get the Union government’s approval and funds for the project. Cities like Bhopal, Chandigarh, Indore, Kanpur, Surat, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar etc are all in the queue for Metro rail funds from the Union government.

The Pune Metro Rail project had got a powerful push from Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar in January this year. This had resulted in the Urban Development ministry paying attention to the project and promising the two civic bodies that it would fast-track the process.

“There is pressure on the Centre from various State governments to seek funds for the Metro rail projects in their own cities. The State government needs to approve the Pune project soon and rush it to the Centre, so that final approval and funds are received on time,” Shashikant Limaye, officer on special duty (OSD) for Pune Metro Rail Project told Sakal Times.

According to Limaye, a revised DPR including new cost pegged at Rs 10,183 crore had been sent to the State government for approval. The State cabinet needs to give the Pune metro the approval.

While 20 per cent of the total cost would be borne each by Centre and State government, 10 per cent would be shouldered by Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations.

THE PROPOSAL

– Two corridors have been planned -one from Chinchwad to Swargate and the second from Vanaz to Ramvadi.
– Half the project cost would be raised through PPP model.
