Work begins at the Longest Tunnel along Tupul-Imphal Railway Line

GUWAHATI: The construction work at portal 2 of the longest Tunnel No.12 of Tupul-Imphal new Railway line project has been started with beginning of excavation work in the presence of N.K. Prasad, General Manager/Construction, N.F. Railway and other senior construction engineers of the N F Railway at Atom Khuman, Haorang Keirel of Imphal West District.  The General Manager, construction, also inspected different work sites of Imphal-Tupul new railway line section.

Tunnel No. 12 of Tupul-Imphal section of the railway line is the longest Railway Tunnel of this project having a length of 10.28 Km. It also has a 9.3 Km long escape tunnel. In addition to that, there are two Adits in this tunnel – Adit 1 and Adit 1-A. Adit 1 is 1.25 Kms and Adit 1-A measures 1.4 Km long, the N F Railway authority here informed

Adits have been planned for speeding the work during construction. After completion they will also be helpful in emergency situations. An escape or safety tunnel will be made parallel to Tunnel No. 12 which will have a length of 9350 m. Main tunnel and safety tunnels are connected to each other by cross passage at every 500m at a distance of 50m. The safety tunnel is made as per the International guidelines like UIC (International Union of Railways) and TSI/SRT(Safety in Railway Tunnels – European Railway Agency) for the safety of the passengers during the operational time. The tunnel construction work is going at a fast rate in all the sites.
