MUMBAI: With the special impetus by Shri Piyush Goyal – Hon’ble Minister of Railways, for conducting the safety audit of all the 445 bridges in Mumbai suburban section, W. Rly has started the structural audit of all the Road Over Bridges (ROBs) in its suburban section from Friday, 13th July, 2018 beginning with the inspection of Mahalaxmi and Bandra Road Over Bridges with the new time saving method through bridge inspection car like tower wagon.
According to a press release issued by Shri Ravinder Bhakar – Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, a new mode of inspection which includes a tower wagon has been devised to save the inspection time to only 2 hours against the 4 hours time required for inspection by conventional method.
Thus, 50% of inspection time is saved by this new inspection method. In the conventional method, a big ladder is required for inspection which is brought by the staff from the Bridge Unit Office located at Lower Parel to the required station.
The ladder needs to be shifted manually from the station to the Bridge Inspection site. During the block time, the ladder is placed on the structure to be inspected and the team climbs on it one-by-one. Only one person can stand on the ladder at a time, which consumes a lot of time. For inspection of each girder the shifting of ladder is required which again takes time making the process tedious.
The conventional method makes the task difficult for the staff as they have to carry tools and equipments while climbing on the long ladder. Inspection with tower wagon allows the whole team to climb along with the tools and machinery and perform the required task simultaneously. During inspection, if any urgent repair is needed, it can be done immediately. The new mode improves the quality of inspection. It enables a faster and safer process. In the Mumbai Suburban Section ( Churchgate-Virar) there are 110 FOBs, 29 ROBs and 4 water pipeline bridges. It is worth mentioning that maximum number of bridges out of total bridges on entire Western Railway, are over Mumbai suburban section. The new method of inspection can be used for ensuring safety of the bridges of the suburban section.
Shri A. K. Gupta – General Manager of W. Rly, Shri R. K. Meena – Principal Chief Engineer, Shri Manoj Sharma – Chief Safety Officer and Shri Sanjay Mishra – Divisional Railway Manager of Mumbai Central Division and other senior officials of Western Railway were present during the inspection at Mahalaxmi ROB. This rob was constructed in the year 1920 & is having 15 girders and 5 numbers of spans. Being an old Road Over Bridge, it was decided to conduct a detailed inspection of this ROB on 13th July, 2018.
The bridge inspection team along-with two tower wagons & concerned staff were deployed to carry out the detailed inspection from 11:00 hours to 13:45 hours over the yard line and PF no. 1. In detailed inspection, the portion of bridge was found structurally sound and in safe condition. This new mode of inspection has been devised to save the inspection time and it took only 1 hr 45 minutes for inspection of bridge portion over each line as against 3 hr 30 minutes time required for inspection by conventional method. Thus 50% of inspection time is saved by this new inspection method.
Similarly, inspection of Bandra Kalanagar ROB was carried out during the midnight of 13th and 14th July, 2018. This ROB was constructed in the year 1961, which includes 13 girders and 3 numbers of spans. Being an old Road Over Bridge, it was decided to conduct a detailed inspection during night on 13th July, 2018. The bridge inspection team along with 1 tower wagon and concerned staff were deployed to carry out the detailed inspection from 1:00 hours to 4:00 hours over the harbour lines and up-fast lines. In the detailed inspection, the portion of bridge was found structurally sound and in safe condition. Similar inspections will be carried out for all the Road Over Bridges on W.Rly’s suburban section.
