WR to carry out Works at Borivili, Dadar & Andheri stations to introduce more trains

Mumbai:  In the next few years, Western Railway (WR), along with the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), will undertake massive yard remodelling projects to save travelling time and improve punctuality on the suburban network.

This will also allow the authorities to introduce more suburban trains.

The yard remodelling will happen at four locations — northern ends of Borivli and Dadar and both ends of Andheri station.

In the earlier report about the civic body and railways agreeing to barter land it was opined by the public that the move will help commuters travelling beyond Borivli to save time.

Currently, trains change tracks on either ends of Andheri station from slow to fast and vice versa. The approved speed during the crossover is 15kmph, which needs to be increased for better train management.

“At Andheri, work needs to be undertaken on both the ends. The crossover, signalling, etc, all will have to be reworked to make the process faster,” said Shailendra Kumar, divisional manager, WR.
The work has not been sanctioned, but the MRVC has been informed. It is likely to take two years, estimated at Rs25-30 crore, to get completed. Once done, trains will be able to change tracks at 30kmph.

After 15-coach rakes were introduced, the length of platform No. 4 at Dadar was increased. However, when extension of platform was done on the northern end, the width of it reduced. “As there is less space left for people to stand, as a safety measure, the train’s speed had to be reduced while entering the station. This means many more seconds being taken by the train. If the width can be increased, we can increase the speed of trains while entering Dadar station,” added Kumar.

In order to avoid delay, the authorities are trying to take up the work of widening platforms, which actually falls under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-Phase II, right away.

On a fast track
